IWC Schaffhausen and Hot Wheels have joined forces to create a joint watch and mini Mercdes-Benz 300SL Gullwing toy set titled “Racing Works.” The IWC x Hot Wheels Racing Works collector set, featuring a titanium watch and matching, 1:64-scale model of iconic and influential Merc coupe which is available in a limited edition of just 50 pieces.
Housed in the coolest packaging ever a metal toolbox in silver and black the set comprises a timepiece, the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “IWC x Hot Wheels Racing Works”; and a model car, the Hot Wheels Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “Racing Works Edition”.
The IWC Hot Wheels Racing Works Edition Pilot’s Watch Chronograph (Ref. IW377904) is a version of the model in the current line, but with custom racing-related tweaks. The 43mm watch boasts a dark gray matte finish achieved from a polishing and blasting treatment. A “Hot Wheels” flame logo adorns the side of the case at 9 o’clock, while the black dial stuns with a checkered flag pattern surrounding the chronograph totalizers and date window. The textile NATO strap picks up the color scheme of the IWC Racing Mercedes-Benz 300 SL.
Driving the watch is the manufacture calibre 69385, a self-winding movement with a 46-hour power reserve. It’s visible through the smoked glass caseback, and a “68” roundel at the center, memorializing IWC and Hot Wheels’ founding years of 1868 and 1968. The number also corelates with Elliot Handler, co-founder of Mattel, created the first generation of Hot Wheels in Southern California. Hot Wheels is now the world’s bestselling auto toymaker, with 20,000 designs and over 8 billion cars sold.
Only 50 IWC x Hot Wheels Racing Works sets will be produced, with No. 1 selling at a Bonhams auction benefitting the Two Bit Circus Foundation. Bidding is open now through October 22, and the estimate is £9,000 to £50,000 ($12,369 to $69,715). The 49 remaining sets are priced at $10,000.
