Maestro Dobel Unveils an Ultra-Premium Tequila with a Mezcal Barrel Finish

Dobel Tequila, celebrated for its innovation and exceptional smoothness, unveils the U.S. debut of the first rare release from its “Dobel Grandes Maestros Collection”: the extraordinary Francisco Toledo Edition. With only 15 bottles arriving stateside, this is more than a luxury spirit—it’s a sculptural masterpiece and a tribute to Mexico’s rich artistic legacy and unparalleled craftsmanship.

A bold testament to Dobel Tequila’s legacy of groundbreaking innovation, this ultra-limited release is the world’s first Extra Añejo tequila finished in mezcal barrels—a category-defining creation that pays homage to Maestro Toledo’s native Oaxaca. Crafted through an exceptional artisanal process, the tequila begins with agave matured for at least seven years, slow-cooked in brick ovens for 48 hours, distilled with precision, and aged for a minimum of three years in new oak barrels. It is then finished for up to four months in American oak mezcal barrels, infusing the deep, dark spirit with complex layers of flavor. The result: a rich, warm, and velvety expression, revealing notes of mezcal smoke, dried fruits, roasted agave, toasted nuts, and soft vanilla.

“Francisco ‘El Maestro’ Toledo and I began dreaming up this collaboration in 2016,” said Juan Dobel, founder of Dobel Tequila. “Francisco and I shared a deep passion for Mexico and its culture, which we reflected through art and tequila. El Maestro and I envisioned a timeless art piece, one that would transcend conventional expectations and become an object that embodied Toledo’s artistic principles and exceptional craftsmanship while showcasing Dobel’s commitment to tequila excellence and innovation.”

Envisioned and designed by Francisco Toledo before his passing in 2019, the bottle is a sculptural tribute to his iconic “Lagartos” series. Crafted from frosted glass and adorned with etched artwork, it rests on a rotating wooden cube base—more reminiscent of a museum piece than a traditional bottle of tequila. Crowned with a hand-carved Teotihuacan stone cap and displayed on a matching pedestal, it’s a striking work of visual poetry. Each piece comes with a signed certificate of authenticity, underscoring its rarity and artistic significance.

In a historic first, one of just 15 bottles allocated to the U.S. from the Dobel Grandes Maestros Collection: The Francisco Toledo Edition is now up for auction on Artnet—marking the platform’s debut curated spirits sale. The remaining bottles from this limited global release of only 281 are available for $5,000 USD through select luxury retailers and exclusive on-premise partners.
