Aston Martin revealed the DBR22, a V12-engined two-seater coach-built design concept that draws inspiration from the marque’s heritage of open-cockpit sports racers, set to make its formal debut on Aug. 19 at 2022 Monterey Car Week.
The automaker says that the DBR22 Concept was inspired by its racing heritage. Specifically, the design pays tribute to the 1952 DB3S and the DBR1, which won Le Mans in 1959 with Carroll Shelby and Roy Salvadori behind the wheel. But unlike every other V12 Speedster we’ve seen limited edition or otherwise the new front grille incorporates a unique carbon fibre design in place of the usual veins seen on series production Aston Martins. The hood features a dramatic horseshoe vent, suspended to help airflow from the 5.2-litre V12 Twin-Turbo engine that sits beneath it.
New 21-inch alloy wheels sport a DBR22-exclusive 14-spoke design with racy center-lock hubs, while nearly all exterior surfaces are coated in a one-off green, showcasing Q by Aston Martin’s “Paint to Sample” option. The DBR22 also features a 3D printed rear subframe which is made from multiple 3D printed parts printed from aluminium and bonded to form the finished subframe.
Power comes from a 5.2-liter, twin-turbo V12 that has a peak output of 705 hp (526 kW/715 PS) and 555 lb-ft (753 Nm) of torque. Capable of hitting 60 mph (96 km/h) from a standstill in 3.4 seconds and run onto a top speed of 198 mph (319 km/h). The engine is paired to a unique calibration of a 8-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission uses torque shaping to give the car a manner and delivery unlike any other model.
The DBR22’s cockpit makes use of both leather and exposed carbon fibre. Inside is a new dashboard with digital displays. It takes on a different look than current cars, and we wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up in Aston Martin’s updated sports car range due next year.
As a concept, the Aston Martin DBR22 isn’t for sale. But it will be on-display at the Pebble Beach Concours D’ Elegance from August 19-21. Discover Opulent Club on Apple news.
