Vintage whisky is always a spirit worth contemplating before each sip. On the high end of Scotch releases so far this year we’ve seen the likes of the Dalmore 45-year-old, now The Macallan distillery enters with the 2018 edition of its 50-year-old. Macallan felt that five decades was the right amount of time for this particular batch of incredibly smooth and lively 50-Year vintage.
The Macallan 50 Years Old, 2018 Edition, according to those behind it, has aged for at least fifty long years in handcrafted European oak sherry seasoned casks from Spain. Such ancient wood shaped the whisky’s character appropriately delivering a rich and complex sip complete with sweet oak vanilla and blackcurrant character, a palate full of fudge, toffee and black peppercorn, and a viscous finish complemented with sublet peat.
“After being left to mature for half a century in our exceptional sherry seasoned oak casks,” said Nick Savage, The Macallan mster distiller, in a prepared statement, “this wonderfully rare single malt is full of rich flavour and beautiful natural colour. The Macallan 50 Years Old – 2018 Release is an incredible addition to our range of unique, mature whiskies and marks another pinnacle of The Macallan whisky makers’ art.”
