Rossinavi Unveils SOLSEA: Hybrid-Electric Catamaran Concept

Italian shipyard Rossinavi has unveiled a new, 43-metre catamaran concept known as SOLSEA. Revealed during the prestigious Design Miami 2024, this groundbreaking collaboration with designer Yves Béhar pushes the boundaries of sustainable super-yacht design and sets new standards for the industry.

The groundbreaking catamaran is the result of a three-year collaboration between the Italian shipyard and Yves Béhar and aims to set new standards for sustainable, eco-conscious yachting. It measures 43 meters (141 feet) and is a modern super-yacht through and through.  Its hybrid-electric propulsion and AI-powered system allows it to operate without refueling for long crossings, while solar panels are seamlessly integrated to optimize energy usage, all within an elegant, minimalistic framework.

“As an active ocean explorer for the last 40 years, I have sailed, kited and surfed across all continents, contributing to ocean preservation initiatives,” explained Béhar. “My deep respect for the oceans informs every aspect of the design.”

This includes a battery and solar panel system said to reduce operating costs by 80 per cent while cruising and by 100 per cent while wintering. Recycled ocean plastic has also been used for certain manufacturing projects, including furniture on board. The catamaran is engineered to tackle various voyages while minimizing its carbon footprint. For day trips, she runs entirely on electric power. Over multi-day journeys, the yacht cruises 90% of the time on electric energy. Even on transatlantic crossings, SOLSEA can operate in electric mode for 80% of the journey.

Inside, Yves Béhar’s design reflects the sea’s calming influence, resulting in soft lines, matte wood tones, and bouclé textiles to create a warm atmosphere. The catamaran is said to offer numerous living configurations, though the owner’s suite is proposed as full-beam, it offers a massive 70 sqm space, complete with a 180-degree view and a private balcony linking both hulls and has been designed with an integrated office, living space and private deck connecting both hulls.

Forward on the main deck, you’ll find a lounge pool. It’s got a mechanical hard-top that can lower during navigation, keeping the area ready for relaxation. The sundecks are flexible, capable of multiple dining and lounging configurations, though the top deck features integrated sun lounge seats and a continuous wood bar that leads to a “viewing lounge”. Another interesting innovation sees the pool cover serve as both shade and a solar surface, moving up when the boat is stationary and down while she is cruising. According to the shipyard, all amenities and controls would also be accessible to the owner via an app.

“Solsea was conceived with active owners in mind – those who are passionate about exploring the seas, participating in ocean sports, and undertaking long-distance crossings without refueling,” concluded Béhar. “She is a return to a simpler, more respectful way to enjoy the ocean.”

SOLSEA represents the future of sustainable luxury yachting. With innovation and environmental consciousness at its core, this new project promises to redefine the way we explore the world’s oceans.
