Spring in the Northern Hemisphere brings Japan’s iconic cherry blossoms, or sakura, into bloom, creating stunning displays across the country. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has revealed a poetic and powerful tribute to spring: the Phantom Cherry Blossom. This one-of-one Phantom Extended commission was created for a Japanese collector with a deep love for Hanami, the centuries-old tradition of flower viewing.

Though cherry trees take generations to cultivate, the Phantom Cherry Blossom bloomed in three years. Rolls-Royce artisans traveled to Japan to capture the client’s vision—evoking the feeling of sitting beneath a cherry tree. The result: a Starlight Headliner with over 250,000 stitches, including a hand-stitched cherry branch and white blossoms, completed in three weeks.

The embroidery process spanned over six months of meticulous design and execution, with the headliner alone requiring three intensive weeks. Each blossom was rendered using a satin stitch technique, optimizing light reflection to create a jewel-like shimmer. An offset tatami stitch, inspired by traditional Japanese weaving, adds dimensionality and texture to the branches, enhancing their organic fluidity and naturalistic form.

The embroidered cherry blossoms extend beyond the headliner, seamlessly integrating into the rear doors and privacy partition. This intricate work required an additional six months to complete. A single artisan meticulously executed the 3D embroidery using a Japanese tatami stitch, ensuring continuity as the branches intertwine and flow harmoniously throughout the cabin.

The meticulous attention to detail extends far beyond embroidery, reinforcing the cohesive thematic vision. Upon opening the rear-hinged doors, one encounters bespoke umbrellas discreetly housed within—an expected hallmark of Rolls-Royce craftsmanship. However, it is the inner lining that captivates: an intricate cherry blossom petal motif, concealed until unfurled, adding an element of refined surprise.

The exterior, finished in an exquisite Crystal over Arctic White, is accentuated by a hand-painted coachline imbued with Sakura-inspired artistry. This delicate embellishment subtly tapers near the rear door before unfurling into a meticulously rendered pink blossom—a masterful balance of restraint and flourish. Every detail, no matter how understated, is executed with deliberate intent, embodying the marque’s philosophy of bespoke luxury.

This one-of-a-kind masterpiece is breathtakingly hyperrealistic, leaving us eager to see how Goodwood will surpass it next. We have no doubt they will.
